Top 5 Dos and Don’ts for Halloween Makeup
#1 Don’t buy makeup from Halloween stores. Products sold at costume stores usually are single-use, cheap and harsh. Many times these products cause breakouts and clog pores. In addition, these products can cause your skin to feel stiff and dry. You don’t have to spend a fortune to pull off a great look, you just have to get a little creative.
#2 Do your makeup first. Applying your makeup before you put on your costume will help keep makeup where you want it and not on your clothes. There’s a sense in ruining an amazing costume with a makeup faux pas.
#3 Do use a primer. You don’t apply paint without priming first. The same rule applies with makeup. Applying a primer that contains dimethicone is best, as this ingredient helps to form a barrier that will protect your skin from heavy makeup and potentially irritating ingredients. If you start with a primer, your Halloween makeup will stay in place and not sweat off a few hours later. It’s a win-win!
#4 Don’t ignore labels. Certain ingredients in cosmetics can cause acne or other skin reactions. It is best to avoid makeup with isopropyl myristate which is commonly found in eyeliner. Though it aids in the smooth application of makeup, it can cause for acne-prone skin to breakout. Another easy thing to keep in mind is to look for products that noncomedogenic, which means they are developed not to clog pores or cause breakouts.
#5 Don’t skip removing your makeup before turning in, no matter how tired you are. If there’s one night of the year not to go to bed with makeup on, Halloween would be it. Your usual cleanser may not be up to the task, so using an argan or jojoba oil to remove makeup will help. Leaving makeup on overnight simply contributes to premature aging of your skin.
Bringing your costume to life takes creative makeup application but taking care of your skin should always be a priority to keep it looking at its best all year long.
